Before my brother left again for Army, he bought a fancy new iPod. This meant I inherited his old one. Aside from the fact that they cost more money than I’m usually willing to spend at once, I’ve always thought it might not be the best idea for me to wander the city with a soundtrack. It’s bad enough when I sing on my bicycle.

But, after a very productive snow day, I have (mostly) figured out how to use my brother’s (three-year) old iPod. It turns out you spin the little circle like it’s a dial or something!

I texted my brother to tell him the good news:

Jaime: Walking around listening to metal is dangerous, probably.

Blaise: For other people.

Jaime: That’s what I meant.

Now all I have to learn is how to want to listen to any other song.

A few people have noted my conspicuous absence from the internet, especially social networking sosuch. It’s halfway purposeful.

Champagne, girl cigs, and Geatorettes are much more interesting.

Keep On Truckin’

When I was very young, no less than five or more than six, I noticed my grandmother’s keychain. It was a blue teardrop of vinyl on which hung a metal pendant. “Keep On Truckin’” underneath a cartoon of a man crashing a car into a brick wall.

“Mimi? Can I have that when you die?” I still had a lot of manners to learn.

On my grandfather’s birthday, the first of the year, she handed me a tiny box.

“A Mimi never forgets.” Inside was that keychain, the one I’d coveted twenty years ago. “Now, you just have to keep on truckin’.”

The reason that Tom Waits is intimidating is that he, more than anyone else I’ve ever seen, knows how one grows up and stays the same without losing a thing. He keeps getting bigger while I get smaller, and it’s just effortless, and I’d be jealous if it weren’t for all the glowing, giddy admiration.

This week, I have three shows. Two on Monday — Rant-O-Wheel, then Hillary Rea’s Fibber — and one on Wednesday, at Little Bar.

Last week, I had one show. Two the week before. One before that. I’ve been busy. It keeps my mind off things.

Tell Me a Story is one of my favorite shows to perform in (and watch!). Hillary always puts together a great group of storytellers, and the wild card story is usually pretty funny, too. Last month, in a surprising twist, my brother was chosen:
