I agree that writing is performative. However, my personal relationship to a fiction reading audience is very different from a physical one. I write fiction because there's a story to tell. Performing is having a specific audience to whom I'm telling a story. They don't sound all that different, but I approach them and think about them very differently.

The thing about writing for an audience of myself is that I find my own thoughts pretty boring. I'm already thinking about them all the time. It's hard to parse out what's potentially interesting to others, finding it all so dull.

The entire idea of writing on the internet is to write to people who are essentially you. You are your own audience. To put another way: whoever might be reading this is interested in what you have to say about something (in this case, what you have to say about what it is you should be saying). Who is going to be more interested in what you have to say than you? Extrapolate that to whatever numerical value is sufficient for your ego and you will have a pretty accurate depiction of your audience.

I would also argue that all writing is performative. You can never divorce yourself from your words, even if you were saying them anonymously. If I was actually going to assign a stratum for this, I'd say blog writing is actually less performative than fiction writing since (generally) the distance between narrator and author is smaller.

Summer was the best kind of family. the kind that looked at you with love in her eyes no matter what. The kind that left enough stories to help fill the void of their absence. She was a thief, a dirtball, a laundry supervisor, a tripping hazard, a hyper vigilant guard and the best friend anyone could ever want. I'll love her always and forever.

It is the hubris of (wo)man to think one can invent oneself after being late to one's own birth. It is the reality of Jaime that proves this thought possible.
